Most people see gassoline as something that comes out of a gas
 +
pump at $2.00 per gallon. Though few take into consideration
 +
the entire process that brought the fuel they burn to the pump.
 +
 +
Here's what I consider: Some millions of years ago the sun
 +
was shining down on the surface of the earth as it does today.
 +
The solar energy strikes the surface at a rate of 1 to 4 billion
 +
Kilocalories per acre per year, or 1,163,000 kWh. Plants fix
 +
carbon from the atmosphere while sinking hydrogen via photo-
 +
synthesis, with an effeciency of 3% or less. So just 34,890 kWh
 +
worth of the original solar energy is converted into plant matter.
 +
Over the course of time about 0.004% of that plant and/or animal
 +
matter will become oil, and not limestone. So just 1.39 kWh
 +
of the original 1 million kWh will become oil. The overall
 +
effeciency of this natural process is very very very poor.
 +
 +
At this rate 98 Tons of organic material (plants) is required to
 +
produce just 1 gallon of gassoline. That is roughly equal to 40
 +
acres of wheat. In 1997 we burned the equivilant of 400 year of
 +
global plant growth, including microscopic oceanic plant life.
 +
http://www.utah.edu/news/releases/03/oct/gas.html
 +
All of this does not include the drilling, refineing, transport,
 +
and other "calateral" "expensis". (Health, War, Inequalities)
 +
 +
To contrast one acre of PhotoVoltic panels which are 13%
 +
effecient could collect 151,190 kWh worth of energy which
 +
is imediatly available as electricity with no further processing.
 +
Wind power is even more effecient that PV. http://www.awea.org/
 +
The US has enough potential wind energy to supply three times
 +
our current anual power consumption.
 +
 +
I have concluded that a Solar Powered BEV is 45,000 to 13,000
 +
times more effecient than a (Solar Powered) Gas ICE Vehicle.

Revision as of 12:11, 26 February 2007

Electric Vehicles are up to 2 to 4 times more effecient that comperable ICE powered vehicles.
Electric Motors don't suffer from power loss and increased emissions over time like Gas and Diesel Engions.
